Computer Vision Syndrome (Digital Eye Strain)

Digital eye strain results from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader, and cell phone use.  The average American worker spends about seven to eight hours a day on digital devices.  This can lead to discomfort and vision problems.  The most common symptoms of digital eye strain are

  • Eyestrain
  • Headaches
  • Dry eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Neck and shoulder pain

The symptoms of digital eye strain may be caused by

  • Uncorrected vision problem (nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism)
  • Glare from overhead fluorescent lights
  • Poor seating posture
  • Improper monitor position
  • Poor lighting
  • High-energy blue light (HEV)

Treatment

  • Make sure your monitor screen is about 20 -28 inches from your eyes and that the screen is 4 to 5 inches below eye level.
  • Position the screen to prevent glare from overhead lighting and light coming from windows.  Change or reduce overhead bulbs and use blinds on windows.
  • A anti-glare screen can be placed in front of the monitor to decrease the amount of light coming from the monitor.
  • Chair height should be adjusted so your feet rest flat on the floor. If your chair has arm rests, they should be adjusted to support your arms while typing.  The wrists should not be resting on the keyboard.
  • Every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.  This is called the 20-20-20 rule.  Blink rate decreases by 50% while using digital devices which can cause dry eyes.  Remember to blink frequently.
  • Computer eyeglasses can be prescribed to meet the unique demands of computer viewing. BluTech eyeglass lenses have a special tint that filters out high-energy visible blue light emitted from digital devices to reduce eyestrain and fatigue.

What is Blue Light?

BlueLightHEV

We encounter blue light in everyday activities.  Blue light is part of the visible spectrum that has a very short wavelength which produces higher energy.  Studies suggest that over exposure to blue light can cause long-term damage to your eyes including cataracts, macular degneration and affect your sleep.

Where does Blue Light come from?

  • The Sun
  • Desktop Computers
  • Smart Phones
  • TVs
  • Gaming Consoles
  • CFL Lightbulbs
  • Tablet Computers

How can we protect our eyes from Blue Light?

BluTech eyeglass lenses contain OLP or ocular lens pigment to reduce the amount of blue light emitted from electronic screens to reduce the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, amd improve sleep.  Through a patented scientific process, these lenses are infused with a precise ratio of Ocular Lens Pigment to give optimal defense against blue light damage.  For more information, please view the video below.
