Corneal Reshaping (Orthokeratology)

What is Corneal Reshaping Therapy?

Corneal reshaping is a FDA-approved process of wearing rigid gas permeable lenses to reshape the eye while sleeping at night. Upon wakening the contact lenses are removed and the patient can see clearly all day without the use of traditional contact lenses or glasses. The contact lenses are worn on a nightly basis to maintain clear and crisp vision during the day.  Ortho-k lenses are used to correct myopia with mild to moderate amount of astigmatism. Corneal reshaping (Ortho-K) is a reversible process; discontinuation of the lenses will result in loss of reshaping of the cornea. Therefore, the lenses must be worn on a nightly basis to achieve effectiveness.

Why wear Corneal Reshaping lenses?

Many children around the world and in the U.S. are enjoying the benefits of wearing corneal reshaping lenses. The children are wearing lenses that slow down their prescription from year after year and have clear vision throughout the day without wearing traditional glasses or contacts. Corneal reshaping therapy lenses can benefit adults of all ages to reduce dependency on glasses and contacts during the day. The side effects of dryness and irritation related to traditional soft contact lenses are negated because the lenses are worn only at night.

Along with the ability to see clearly all day without the use of glasses and traditional contact lenses, Ortho-k can be used to halt the progression of myopia in children. Myopia is one of the leading causes of vision reduction in children. Recent studies have shown that corneal reshaping therapy can reduce the progression of myopia by as much as 43% to 50%! Think of these contacts as a retainer for your eyes instead of your teeth. The “eye retainer” is designed to hold the eye from growing further to prevent increasing myopia or nearsightedness. Traditional contacts and glasses do not have this effect and only treat the symptom of myopia and not the underlying cause.
