What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery, or refractive surgery, are different procedures that can reduce your lens prescription, giving clearer, crisper vision without glasses or contact lenses. These procedures can correct myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.

While the goal of these surgeries is to improve your vision permanently, laser eye surgery does not guarantee 20/20 vision. Many people still have to wear glasses or contact lenses, but patients still report clearer vision after their surgery.

What’s the Process?

Consultations

Laser eye surgery consultations are comprehensive eye exams that determine if your eyes are healthy enough to have surgery. These consultations can also help us determine which type of laser eye surgery is best for you and your eyes.

However, laser eye surgery isn’t for everyone. Some conditions might prevent you from having the procedure, including:

Once we determine if you’re a candidate for laser eye surgery, we’ll put you in touch with an ophthalmologist who will perform the procedure. While we don’t perform laser eye surgeries in our practice, we do help you manage the healing process.

Following the procedure, we’ll book a series of appointments to monitor your eyes and provide care when needed. We may prescribe eye drops and other medications to make sure your eyes are healing properly.

It’s common to experience some uncomfortable side effects after your surgery, but these are normal. Side effects can include:

  • Dry eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Halos
  • Glare

Types of Laser Eye Surgery

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) eye surgery is one of the most common refractive surgeries. During the procedure, your ophthalmologist creates a small hinged “flap” from the outer layer of your lens (epithelium), giving them access to the underlying corneal tissue.

Your ophthalmologist then reshapes the corneal tissue with an excimer laser to correct your refractive error. The flap is placed back in its original position after the surgery and left to heal.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) eye surgery is similar to LASIK, but instead of creating a flap, the epithelium is removed entirely. After reshaping your corneal tissue with an excimer laser, the epithelium will heal over time.

PRK is often recommended for patients who may have thin corneas or other issues that might prevent them from having LASIK eye surgery.
