Insertion and removal of scleral contact lenses

Scleral Contact lenses are large diameter gas permeable contact lenses that are designed to vault over the corneal surface and rest on the “white” of the eye (sclera).   To correct an irregular corneal surface, a scleral lens replaces the irregular cornea with a smooth optical refracting surface to correct the following corneal conditions below:

KERATOCONUS

PELLUCID MARGINAL DEGENERATION

CORNEAL TRAUMA

DRY EYE SYNDROME – GRAFT-VERSUS-HOST-DISEASE (GVHD) and STEVENS-JOHNSONS SYNDROME

POST LASIK OR PK

CORNEAL TRANSPLANT

IRREGULAR ASITGMATISM

HIGH MYOPIA – OVER -6.00 D

ANISOMETROPIA  - LARGE DIFFERENCES IN RX BETWEEN THE TWO EYES.

Insertion and Removal of Scleral Lenses

Many patients that have been told that they cannot wear contact lenses because of an irregular cornea or other conditions such as dry eye.   Scleral contact lenses are able to mask the irregularity of the cornea due to a liquid reservoir that is present in between the corneal surface and back of the contact lens.   In addition, the liquid reservoir can provide relief to patients with dry eye.
