contact lensesopt

In recent years, contact lens technology has offered great comfort and vision throughout all hours of the day.  At our office, about 75% of our patients wear daily disposable lenses which are thrown out at the end of each day.  However, with the advancements in contact lens technology, some people believe they no longer need to wear glasses.   Here are some reasons why you need a current pair of prescription eye glasses.

1) You need to rest your eyes

After a long day of contact lens wear, the eyes need to rest in order to get the oxygen needed to remain healthy.  It is good practice to remove your contacts after 12-16 hours of wear and switch to eyeglasses.  Try to do this at least every few hours every evening and one day during the week.

2) Allergies

Allergies usually cause problems with your eyes during the different seasons.  This may force you to remove your contact lenses to get relief.  Allergy eye drops are prescribed to reduce symptoms of itchy, burning, and watery eyes. Glasses would be necessary to maintain comfortable vision until eye allergies have been reduced.

3) Eye Infection or Trauma

We routinely see irritated eyes from infections and scratched corneas at our office.  Discontinuation of contact lenses is a must during these situations in order for proper healing.  Medicated eye drops are prescribed to treat infections and heal the eye. Up-to-date eye glasses become necessary during this situation.

4) Other Events

There are other reasons why you may not be able to wear your contacts.  If you tear or rip a contact lens, if you run out of contact lenses, you will need to wear your glasses.  Parents of newborns and young children are awaken in the middle of the night and need to be able to see right away.  This is where eyeglasses become handy!  Also, if you have an new pair of glasses, you will be more likely to wear them.  Your old, thick, beat up pair of glasses may be preventing you from taking a needed break from your contact lenses.  Come to our office today to discuss your eyewear options with our optical team.  925-743-1222
