The first photo shows a metallic foreign body on the clear covering of the eye called the cornea. I removed the foreign body and the second photo shows a slightly indented area or abrasion of the cornea that was left over after removal of the metal. She immediately had relief of her symptoms. I then prescribed antibiotic drops to protect the area from infection. Our patient returned the next day for a follow-up appointment. The last photo shows the abrasion almost completely healed by the next day. She continued antibiotic drops for the next 5-7 days. Her eye healed and vision was preserved.
When you experience something in your eye, it is important to seek medical attention right away from your eye doctor. Don’t wait. If left untreated, an object in the eye causes pain, irritation, and can even cause permanent damage to the cornea which can lead to scarring.
